Jackdaws in the garden…

In which two jackdaws decide to hang around our garden…

Evidence that photos taken through the kitchen window in the rain don’t come out terribly well…

We were delighted last week to discover that we had been adopted by a pair of jackdaws. They seemed to come several times every day – sometimes looking for worms – it was a very wet week and I imagine the nearest thing to a fast food outlet birds can get. I also saw one of them with a beak full of grass clippings, so I assume he/she was nesting.

We used to see them when I was a girl. My mother claimed that one stole my boiled egg when I was sitting in the garden, but I don’t remember any of that. I loath eating eggs, so perhaps I surreptitiously gave it to the bird.

I’ve always loved members of the corvine family, they just have such personality.

I’m captivated by their bright little eyes. They seem to be saying ‘I might be up to no good, but what are you going to do about it’.

I spent so much time simply watching them, I didn’t manage to get any decent photos. See if you can spot the one in this picture – and yes it definitely is a jackdaw, not a pigeon.

Anyway, I liked this page about jackdaws, and it has the benefit of a good photo too!

We are sinking under a plague of pigeons around here, so I’m quite happy for the jackdaws to help themselves. They’re so much more interesting to watch.
